Alarm Tips

Security Systems Really Do Make a Difference!

  • In 2005 the average loss per burglary in the United States was $1,725, according to the 2005 Uniform Crime Report from the U.S. Department of Justice.
  • Installing a monitored alarm system has historically decreased a home's burglary risk threefold. When burglaries do occur in homes with monitored alarm systems, losses are almost 40% less than in homes without monitored alarm systems.*
  • Most insurance carriers will offer discounts, some as much as 20%, on renter's insurance with a monitored security system installed.

It Can't Work if You Don't Use It...

Industry studies show that in 41% of burglaries among homes with alarm systems, the security system was not turned on.

Network Multifamily, the nation's oldest and largest provider of in-unit monitored alarm amenities, suggests the following tips for added security in and around your apartment home.

  • Always immediately report suspicious behavior, and be aware of activities in your community.
  • Keep a radio on and use timers to operate lights; a home that appears occupied deters burglars.
  • When away for an extended period, leave blinds and curtains in everyday positions and turn your telephone ringer down so no one outside can hear repeated rings.
  • Ask a friend or neighbor to pick up newspapers, door hangers, and other deliveries.
  • Never leave a spare key hidden outside. Burglars know the best places.
  • Ask to see identification from service and delivery people before letting them into your home.
  • Post emergency phone numbers by the telephone, including your cellular phone or pager number for emergency purposes or for visitors to your home.
  • Be sure to test your system monthly to ensure it is working properly before an emergency occurs.
  • Police in most areas require home alarm users to have a valid, current permit, which registers their alarm. If you don't have a permit, call your local city or county authorities who can tell you if a permit is required and how to obtain or renew one.
